The Excerpt

Jackson nodded and lifted his hand again. I stepped forward, swallowing any doubt as he reached out, one hand cupping my cheek, the other grasping my hand lightly, tracing circles with his thumb and before I could worry about how those circles made me melt inside, the memory slammed into me.

"Margaret!" Gemma shouted with glee. "Come out of there, I know you are trying to scare me!"

I watched the young red-haired girl put her hands on her hips, trying to be brave. She scanned their father's study, narrowing her eyes. The fire roaring in the hearth was the only source of light in the room, casting dark shadows across the furniture.

Maggie hid behind her father's chair, in silent wait for her prey.

"I'm going to tell Mother!"

Maggie's little hands tightened on the chair but she didn't make a sound. I walked over to her, watching her mouth twist up into a sly grin. She was the older of the girls, but she protected her sister fiercely, proclaiming she was the only one who could tease her. Gemma hated when Maggie played games, but it thrilled Maggie no end and I could feel excited anticipation roll off her in waves.

Gemma's bravery faltered as she stepped forward toward the overstuffed armchair, expecting her sister to jump out at her at any moment.

But Maggie waited. She had incredible patience, but I sensed that part of it was stubbornness and a desire to test boundaries. Her head poked out from behind the chair just as Gemma turned toward the love seat. I watched as Maggie slowly came out of her hiding spot and charged at her sister.

Gemma let out a scream but Maggie covered her sister's mouth with her hand.

Both girls collapsed on the floor, Gemma's muffled squeals threatening to break through Maggie's tiny fingers.

"Shh," Maggie cooed.

Gemma managed to wrestle her mouth away from Maggie's hand. "I hate you!" Her indignation faltered into a fit of giggles and Maggie quickly joined her.

As she helped her sister up from the floor Maggie said, "Gemma. You need to always expect the unexpected. You can't go through life being scared all the time." Even though Maggie was a mere nine years old, she spoke as if she'd lived lifetimes before. It was one of the things that drew me to her more than any other Prognatum I'd watched.

Maggie took a handkerchief and wiped her sister's cheeks.

"A lady wouldn't do that to her sister," Gemma said, finally relaxing.

"I don't want to be a lady," Maggie stated firmly. "I want to see the world and not just make babies for the rest of my life."

Gemma shook her head. "That's what we are supposed to do. That's what Mother does."

Maggie's indignation flowed through her and into me. I knew Maggie was born to follow through with her Prognatum duties, she just didn't know it yet. It was rare for a Prognatum to want the Guard position but Maggie would be thrilled when her father revealed it to her at seventeen.

As Maggie reached down to help Gemma up from the floor she whispered, "It's not for me."

Gemma wrapped her sister in a tight hug. "I will love you either way, dear sister."

Maggie rested her head against Gemma's shoulder. "I love you too."

I fell out of the memory just as quickly as I'd fallen in, my legs shaking.

What inspired you to write ERAMANE?
I really don’t remember. It was over ten years ago when the idea popped in my head. I think I was driving in my car. But that’s the awesome thrill of being a writer, when those great ideas just peek-a-boo in on you.

What are some of your favorite books/authors?
The Hobbit, anything from Poe or King, I added a new fav when I read The Hunger Games, Ann Rice has a special place in my heart, and I read every single R.L Stein book I could get my hands on when I was a kid.

How did you get in to writing?
From reading, there is something about a really great book that takes hold of you and won’t let go, and you find yourself thinking, “Man, I want to create something that awesome too!”

What do you like to do other than write?
I love listening to music and hanging with my family. I like catching a movie here and there. I really like to drink coffee and think about writing. Umm, does that count?

Did you listen to music when you wrote ERAMANE, and if so, who were some of the artists?
I sure did. But the experience of music is so individual, and tagging Eramane with the music that helped inspire me to write it might spoil the experience for others. It might not be that big of a deal, I don’t know.

How long did it take to write ERAMANE?
Well like I said, the idea came to me over ten years ago. I began writing immediately but not steadily. I didn’t actually finish it until 2005. Then I sat on it for several years before deciding to publish. And there were some developmental changes made during the editing process, but for the most part my initial story remained. So in short…haha…about 13 years. Don’t worry though; book two is moving along at a much faster rateJ

Did you have the whole trilogy planned before you began writing book #1?
Not even close. I know how I want ERAMANE to end, and I know certain things that I want to happen in the story, certain things that have to happen, and with that I will take her to the end…the path is plotted daily.

Review: Backward Glass

Backward Glass
by David Lomax
Published October 8th 2013
by Flux
ARC from Netgalley
Goodreads |  Amazon |

Summary from Goodreads:
Crack your head, knock you dead, then Prince Harming's hunger's fed.

It's 1977, and Kenny Maxwell is dreading the move away from his friends. But then, behind the walls of his family's new falling-apart Victorian home, he finds something incredible--a mummified baby and a note: "Help me make it not happen, Kenny. Help me stop him."

Shortly afterwards, a beautiful girl named Luka shows up. She introduces Kenny to the backward glass, a mirror that allows them to travel through time. Meeting other "mirror kids" in the past and future is exciting, but there's also danger. The urban legend of Prince Harming, who kidnaps and kills children, is true--and he's hunting them. When Kenny gets stranded in the past, he must find the courage to answer a call for help, change the fate of a baby--and confront his own destiny.

Thoughts:
I'm still struggling to find words best to describe this book. This is actually not a bad thing because the book left me quite speechless and I did not expect to love it but I ended up totally awed by it.

Backward Glass is all sorts of amazing, frightening and confusing at times with teenage angst and a big mystery thrown in. You get a whole bunch of teens chosen to be time travellers through a mystery mirror/glass and of course without their meaning to it, chaos does ensues as result of such adventures. At first, it's hard to keep up with all the rules that the mirror kids had to follow but after getting to know them, it's like being a part of a cool secret club that only a few people can join.

Kenny; the main protagonist is not without his fault and sometimes his goody two-shoes attitude is kind of annoying but his determination to change the past and prevent the death of a mysterious baby inspired his fellow mirror kids to do the same.

I love how they all come together to achieve this despite coming from different time and the end result although not totally satisfying actually give readers hope that all of the mirror kids did find their own happy endings.

I really hoped that there's more stories about the mirror kids since it was hinted that there are more mirrors out there in the world involving kids from even Asia and beyond. There was even mention that the mirrors actually originated from the future since it specified time zones which the ancient kids did not know of. A further story about the place between the mirrors which was called the Silverlands by Kenny and his gang could also be explored by the author if he wants to continue this wonderful world.

As I've said before, the possibilities are endless with a time travel plot and this book certainly hits the mark!

Verdict: 5 stars.

I have 15 minutes to save my mother’s life….

But that’s not how it happened. The story she’s been told all her life is a lie and when Lara takes a bullet meant for her mother, her future changes forever.

The love of her life acts like a stranger. Her simple life is replaced with a giant house, glamorous clothes and a new boyfriend.

I have  no memory of what I did before this. I rub my temples. I'm missing something, and my head throbs. I flip through the papers I notice in my hand. It's a pamphlet that says I have fifteen minutes to be in the past.Time travel?
Flipping through the pages I see short-term memory loss is to be expected but will fade soon. I paid money to go back, but why into a school? Something about it is familiar, and I know the hall I'm standing in leads to a music room.
But I don't know how I know any of this. I just do. As if memories were uploaded into my brain.
A photo falls from my papers and lands face up.

FF Friday #15

Alison Can Read Feature & Follow

Hi, everyone! It's time for another FF Friday.

Q: It is up to you to do a Kickstarter campaign for your favorite book!!! Who are you casting for the main characters?

I'm in love with Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor and would probably go gaga and throw a party if they decided to make this one into a movie. There are so many characters in this series and I had a hard time dream casting even the two main leads.

For Karou that kick-ass blue-haired demon girl, I would probably picked Sophie Turner from Games of Thrones. But I'm still debating whether she is bad-ass enough for the role. She has that tortured look but not enough sass, if you ask me. Plus we need to change her hair colour.

For Akiva, I really had a very difficult time because he was described as a prefect looking angel with bodies to die for. So who could fit that description?

Avan Jogja from Victorious seemed quite nice because he has that exotic looking face but then maybe he needs to built up his muscles a bit.

What do you guys think of my dream cast? Let me know and thanks for stopping by.

Waiting on Wednesday #41: The Elites

Waiting on Wednesday is a wonderful meme created by Jill from Breaking the Spine where we highlighted an upcoming release that we're eagerly anticipating.

The Elites
by Natasha Ngan
Paperback, 368 pages
Published September 5th 2013
by Hot Key Books
Summary from Goodreads:
‘There is a rumour that the Elites don’t bleed.’

Hundreds of years into the future, wars, riots, resource crises and rising sea-levels have destroyed the old civilisations. Only one city has survived: Neo-Babel, a city full of cultures – and racial tension.

Fifteen-year-old Silver is an Elite, a citizen of Neo-Babel chosen to guard the city due to her superior DNA. She’d never dream of leaving – but then she fails to prevent the assassination of Neo Babel’s president, setting off a chain of events more shocking and devastating than she could ever have imagined. Forced to flee the city with her best friend Butterfly (a boy with genetically-enhanced wings), Silver will have to fight to find her family, uncover the truth about Neo-Babel and come to terms with her complicated feelings for Butterfly.

Thoughts:
Okay so this is not actually an upcoming release but a book that has already been published but is so under the radar that I think that it needs more promotion. It is a UK YA hence there's only a paperback version and have yet to be published as an e-book. Hurry up already! I love the premise, the cover and the kick-ass looking chick in front of it and the fact that the author has the same first name as mine. :)

Top Ten Tuesday

Welcome to my first ever Top Ten Tuesday post. Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by the sweet girls over at The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books I Would Love To See As A Movie/TV Show

1. Sabriel by Garth Nix

I know this book is so obscure because it was published way back when people haven't gotten around to read much YA fantasy books. But it is one of my all time favourite and I wished that more people would read it. I've always imagined Keira Knightley as Sabriel if this was made into a movie because she just seemed tailor made for it. A kick-ass necromancer who ended up saving and romancing a cursed prince is really an intriguing plot for a movie, if you ask me.

2. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Angels, demons, forbidden romance, exotic beautiful Prague setting and a girl with blue hair. Just please make sure the actor who plays the angel; Akiva is to die for.

3. Cinder by Marissa Meyer
This book has anime elements all over it so maybe it is just appropriate to make it into a box-office success. A cyborg falling in love with a prince is just too delicious to pass up.

4. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
It's like Legally Blonde meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Who wouldn't love to see a girly blonde with a pink taser hunting out supernaturals? I do!

5. Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Yup, I just love a strong heroine. And Lady Katsa certainly fits the bill. A girl blessed with the Grace of killing met a prince who can reads minds. Brilliant!

I know it will be tricky to turn this into a movie/tv show since it has a Russian setting but really that's the whole appeal.

Asian-inspired YA fantasy? Yes, we do need more of that.

I had mixed feelings about the first book but after recently reading the second, this series turned out to be one of my favourite.

Funny, quirky with a healthy dose of paranormals running amok in a school for delinquent teen supernaturals! Gimme, gimme.

The only stand alone in this list. I just love it because it is so funny and tragic at the same time.

That's it folks! I love to find out what YOU guys think should be in the list. Happy Tuesday!
