The Queen's Choice (Heir of Chrior #1)
by Cayla Kluver
ebook, 304 pages
Expected publication: January 28th 2014
by Harlequin Teen
Summary from Goodreads:
Magic was seeping out of me, black and agonizing. I could see it drifting away. The magic that would let me pass the Road to reach home again.

When sixteen-year-old Anya learns that her aunt, Queen of the Faerie Kingdom of Chrior, will soon die, her grief is equaled only by her despair for the future of the kingdom. Her young cousin, Illumina, is unfit to rule, and Anya is determined not to take up the queen's mantle herself.

Convinced that the only solution is to find Prince Zabriel, who long ago disappeared into the human realm of Warckum, and persuade him to take up his rightful crown, Anya journeys into the Warckum Territory to bring him home. But her journey is doomed to be more harrowing than she ever could have imagined….

Babble:
I'm so excited to discover more and more YA fantasy books published in the future. But Cayla's previous series; Legacy did not really impressed me. I'm hoping that this time it will be different.

Review: These Broken Stars

These Broken Stars (Starbound #1)
by Amie Kaufman , Meagan Spooner
ebook
Published December 10th 2013
by Disney Hyperion

Summary from Goodreads:
It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

Thoughts:
Normally I would cringe and try to skip a YA book with such heavy romantic elements but surprisingly eventhough the romance is the main pull of this book, I found it to be quite enjoyable. First of all, both of the characters are really likeable. Lilac is no Mary Sue or some poor little rich girl who can't defend herself. She proved to be quite the survivor and at the beginning it is through her quick actions and knowledge relating to the machinery of the ship that she is able to save Tarver and herself.

And Tarver is so reminiscent of Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games. A trained war hero who has a sensitive side writing poetry. My..my..I want one of those. Although there's spark when they first met, the love does not blossom instantly and it took some time before both of them actually let their guard down and surrender to their feelings.

And as the plot veered from focussing on how two very different characters coped with the harsh reality of being the only survivors of a crashed space ship into discovering an extra-terrestrial life on the strange planet, I just find myself more and more intrigue with the whole story. However, the ending is kind of abrupt and I'm left wondering what is the real answer to all of the questions. Will there be more of Lilac and Traver? Go and read the book and tell me what you guys think. I'm still reeling from the abundance of emotions in this adventure.

Blog Tour (Review & Giveaway): Sugar Babies

Sugar Babies by Mickey J. Corrigan
Publication date: November 4th 2013
Genres: Adult, Romance, Thriller
Goodreads |  Amazon |

Synopsis:
A sugar daddy can make your money woes disappear overnight. But for sugar babies, life is like a chocolate covered time bomb: sweet on the outside, deadly on the inside.

Young, beautiful, and hungry, Maire, Esme and Niki want what every woman wants: love, work, safe shelter, the bills paid off, a diamond-studded Rolex, and a two-bedroom condo with an ocean view. Working as sugar babies seems to be the only way to make this happen. But the sugar life is more dangerous than they thought.

Maire O’Rourke is too hot to handle herself properly. She tends to wear too tight clothes and too much make-up, but she’s got more than sex on her mind. She’s already landed one of the richest sugar daddies in Coconut City, a tropical paradise boasting more lonely men per multimillion dollar estate than just about anywhere else.

Sweet Esme Grant is a buxom blonde with a rough and tumble lover she’s left behind somewhere in hill country. She’s come to Coconut City in order to find herself a sugar daddy, a rich older man willing to fund her, along with her hometown boyfriend and their Mayberry-gone-bad dreams.

Niki Stephanopoulos, a dark, iconoclastic artist enrolled in a teaching certification program at Coconut College, struggles with depression fueled by guilt. She is embarrassed by her dependence on her family for the money she needs to survive. But she feels even worse after sleeping with her sexy, much older landlord when she’s short the rent.

Welcome to the secret lives of sugar babies. On the first day of the month, Maire, Esme and Niki struggle with overdue bills and sexy beaus. Readers can join them as they figure out ways to pay the rent, make decent love to indecent men, and stay upright on the rough road to happiness. Sugar Babies is a modern-day romance, a blue martini with a nasty twist. An intoxicating mystery steeped in social satire, the story of Esme, Niki and Maire is an all-American morality tale.

Three beautiful young women: place your order now.

Thoughts:
Sugar Babies is a compelling look into the hard truths behind the lives of three very different girls who unwittingly became mistresses to wealthy men in the fictional Coconut City. It was interesting to see how these girls fell into the so-called life of being a sugar baby and the way the book is written from a guy point of view who became involved with all of the girls adds a certain mystery to the whole story.

I love how distinct the three girls are. Maire; the fiery redhead who started a business introducing young girls to their prospective sugar dadies, Esme; the stunning beauty who sacrificed herself to support her useless boyfriend and Nikki; the troubled teacher in training. Fans of erotica might be a bit disappointed by the lack of hot scenes but this book reminded me a lot to Jackie Collin's earlier works which I found quite enjoyable.

AUTHOR BIO:
Author Mickey J. Corrigan lies and works and gets into trouble in the lurid tropics of South Florida, where sugar babies are as common as gators, skeeters and snowbirds. Other titles include the novellas Geekus Interruptus, Dream Job, Professional Grievers, and Me Go Mango. Sugar Babies is her first novel.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: The Perimeter

Hi, everyone! Today I'm having a Book Blitz for the book; The Perimeter by Shalini Boland.

The Perimeter by Shalini Boland
(Outside #3)
Publication date: November 18th 2013
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult
Sypnosis:
In this fractured world, a sinister force is coming for Riley, and the only things keeping her safe are a perimeter fence and the people she loves. As her life is threatened, she must make impossible choices. But help comes from the most unlikely of places, and all Riley needs to know is: who can she really trust?

Meanwhile, a repentant killer searches for peace and salvation, but what he gets is the exact opposite. Now he’ll have to make the hardest decision of his life.

The Perimeter is a darkly captivating dystopian tale of adventure, danger, love and redemption that will have you on the edge of your seat and up at night turning the pages to find out what happens next . . .

Goodreads |  Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Smashwords | iTunes

What can you tell us about The Outside Series?
Set in the near future, these three novels follow Riley as she overcomes the murder of her younger sister by tracking down the killer across a post-apocalyptic Britain. At the same time, she is forced to take on the might of a twisted regime intent on conquering the nation.

The story is full of action and adventure with a smattering of angsty romance. Books two and three become more darkly dystopian.

How do you develop your characters?
My characters grow as I write them. I always think of their upbringing and their circumstances and what bearing this will have on their actions. I try to put myself in their position - How would they really react in a particular situation?

I often back my characters into impossible situations or give them difficult dilemmas to deal with, that even I don’t know how to deal with. I hope this makes the story more unpredictable and the drama more realistic.

The naming process is very important to me. If a character has a good name, they can come alive. Sometimes, a minor character with a great name will try to take over and carve out a bigger role. I usually let them!

Who is your ideal reader?
Someone who likes the ‘what if …’ scenario: What if you were living your life and it took an unexpected twist?

My books are aimed at young adults, but I write the kinds of books that I would like to read myself – post-apocalyptic adventure and urban fantasy with a twist of horror and a dusting of romance. My current readers are aged anywhere from thirteen to seventy.

What was your journey as a writer?
I used to be a singer songwriter, signed to Universal Music. But it’s not a lifestyle that goes well with having a family and I found myself resenting the time spent away from my kids. I wasn’t successful enough to have nannies and entourages!

One day, I had an idea for a great ending to a story and I started scribbling my first novel. Writing fiction gave me the new creative outlet I needed. Plus, I can write from home and set my own timetable. I love it!

What is your writing process?
I don’t have a set-in-stone process. I usually have a rough plan and work my way steadily through the chapters, editing as I go.

What authors most inspire you?
Authors who can weave multiple plot lines with ease, whose characters evoke strong emotions and who can keep you guessing till the end. I’m in awe of Carlos Ruis Zafon, Laini Taylor, Stephenie Meyer, Suzanne Collins and Paullina Simons.

What books, written by someone else, do you wish you'd written yourself?
Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins or Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.

AUTHOR BIO:
Shalini lives in Dorset, England with her husband and two noisy boys. Before children, she was signed to Universal Music as a singer songwriter. Now, writing novels has hijacked her life and she is usually to be found with a laptop welded to her fingers and the house in a permanent state of neglect.

Waiting on Wednesday #51: My Name is Rapunzel

Waiting on Wednesday is a wonderful meme created by Jill from Breaking the Spine where we highlighted an upcoming release that we're eagerly anticipating.

My Name is Rapunzel
by K.C. Hilton
Paperback, 355 pages
Expected publication: December 15th 2013
Summary from Goodreads:
My tale has been told again and again, and I’ve heard each one. Except for my hair, I barely recognize the pitiful renditions. Muddled versions, crafted to entertain laughing children…but the children wouldn’t have laughed if they’d known the real story. It wasn't their fault. They didn't know the truth. Nobody did.

My name is Rapunzel. I will tell you my story. I will tell you the truth.

Babble:
I love fairy tale retelling and am hoping that this will not be as sad and disappointing as the book Towering by Alex Flinn.

Review: The Naturals

The Naturals
by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Published November 5th 2013
by Disney-Hyperion
ARC from Netgalley
Goodreads |  Amazon | Barnes & Noble | TBD
Summary from Goodreads:
Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.

Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

Thoughts:
The Naturals reminded me a lot of another YA mystery thriller; Impostor which also featured so-called gifted teens working with the authority to catch serial killers. And just like that book, I find it a little hard to believe that these teens have what it takes to become really efficient agents. Why you might ask? Well...they spend too much time ogling each other and wondering what that other person thinks of them instead of solving the case on hand. I mean...really!

This could have been a much enjoyable mystery if the annoying love triangle are kept at a minimum and instead more clues are given out regarding the so-called killers. But that ending certainly caught me by surprise and it saved the book from being an over the top mushy YA romance pretending to be a mystery. Is there going to be a next book? I'm more interested about the killer than about Cassie and her male counterparts.

Blog Tour (Excerpt & Giveaway) : Memory's Wake

Memory's Wake (Memory's Wake Trilogy #1)
by Selina Fenech
Published June 16th 2011
by Fairies and Fantasy Pty Ltd (first published June 5th 2011)
Goodreads |  Amazon | BN
Summary from Goodreads:
Lost in a world full of monstrous fairies, a troubled sixteen year old has to find out who she is and why her memories were stolen before she is found by those who want her dead.

She takes the name "Memory" and knows she has just one goal - to find her way home, wherever that is. But this land is strange. No technology to be seen, and iron is banned, thanks to a pact the humans have with the magical creatures who share their pre-industrial era world. In her t-shirt and torn jeans, Memory knows she's different, even before she performs impossible magic.

Haunted by her past, chased by a dragon, wanted by the king and stalked by the strange, handsome savage that seems to know her, everyone is after Memory, and she suspects it's not just for her eye-catching outfit. Her forgotten past holds dangerous secrets that will challenge everything she believes and risk the lives of everyone she loves.

Out through the archway, the path led Memory into an emerald green paradise. Tall, well-trimmed hedges looped around the grounds, separating small and large areas full of flowers, statues and fruit trees. Running water sounded from everywhere. She could see, some way down the path, a large marquee posted amongst climbing roses and pine trees where people milled about. Looking back at the castle itself, Memory blew out a low whistle. The place had goddamned towers. The sun still shone, but dipped low. It had taken them some time to get ready, but she really must have slept most of the day for it to be this late. She had breakfast, lunch and dinner to make up for.

Part way down the path she froze, sure she had heard Eloryn’s voice. Looking around, she couldn’t see anyone down the long path to the grand tent. To both her sides, hedges stood tall and thick. But then there was Roen’s voice too. She walked soft-footed, trying to trace them.

Soon she stood with her ear up against a hedge. They were on the other side of it, talking in hushed voices. What were they doing out here? They were supposed to be at their exclusive meeting. Had they lied to her? Betrayal burned in Memory, and she stilled herself to listen in.

“...your concern. It was right of you to mention this in private,” Roen was saying.

“You see it too, the resemblance between us? I don’t want to think it, but it explains too much.” Eloryn sounded scared.

“I know she is strange in ways, but she hardly seems malevolent.”

Memory sucked in her breath. They’re talking about me.

“I’ve told you how she appeared, caught within the Veil door. What if she did not come from Avall?”

“There is no human land beyond the Veil anymore. There is only Avall, and the land of the fae. You don’t think she is some type of fae?”

Feet shuffled. “A fairy changeling? I wondered so when we first met, but I shared bread with her and fae won’t abide bread.”

“But you still don’t believe her to be human?”

“How she appeared, through the Veil as she did, how she looks so like me, how she has no memory or life of her own... Alward’s research told of the hell beyond the Veil. He believed demons from there could find their way through. Doppelgangers that could cling to a traveler through a broken Veil door, taking their appearance so they can appear human...” Eloryn’s voice faded out, distressed.

Ice shivered under the surface of Memory’s skin.

They thought she was a demon.

Review: Palace of Spies

Palace of Spies (Palace of Spies #1)
by Sarah Zette
Published November 5th 2013
by HMH Books for Young Readers
ARC from Netgalley
Goodreads |  Amazon | Barnes & Noble | TBD
Summary from Goodreads:
A warning to all young ladies of delicate breeding who wish to embark upon lives of adventure: Don't.

Sixteen-year-old Peggy is a well-bred orphan who is coerced into posing as a lady in waiting at the palace of King George I. Life is grand, until Peggy starts to suspect that the girl she's impersonating might have been murdered. Unless Peggy can discover the truth, she might be doomed to the same terrible fate. But in a court of shadows and intrigue, anyone could be a spy—perhaps even the handsome young artist with whom Peggy is falling in love...

Thoughts:
I was expecting a funny, quirky historical romance with a dash of mystery and intrigue thrown in and I did get those at the beginning. But honestly, halfway through when Peggy is already in the palace of King George, it gets rather tedious to read what's going on, who's who and what's what.

Peggy is quite a delightful character but she seemed to always changing her mind. And the supposedly love triangle just didn't cut it for me. In truth, I think this book is much more about court politics than finding out who killed the previous lady in waiting whom our dear Peggy is currently impersonating.

Not as fun as a Julia Quinn's novel or as intriguing as R.L. LaFevers; His Fair Assassin series - Palace of Spies might be a good introduction to historical fiction for teens looking for a light mystery.

Verdict: 3 stars.

Waiting on Wednesday #49: Influx

Waiting on Wednesday is a wonderful meme created by Jill from Breaking the Spine where we highlighted an upcoming release that we're eagerly anticipating.

Influx
by Daniel Suarez
Expected publication: February 20th 2014
by Dutton Adult
Summary from Goodreads:
What if our civilization is more advanced than we know?

Are smart phones really humanity's most significant innovation since the moon landings? Or can something else explain why the bold visions of the 20th century--fusion power, genetic enhancements, artificial intelligence, cures for common disease, extended human life, and a host of other world-changing advances--have remained beyond our grasp? Why has the high-tech future that seemed imminent in the 1960's failed to arrive?

Perhaps it did arrive...but only for a select few.

Particle physicist Jon Grady is ecstatic when his team achieves what they've been working toward for years: a device that can reflect gravity. Their research will revolutionize the field of physics--the crowning achievement of a career. Grady expects widespread acclaim for his entire team. The Nobel. Instead, his lab is locked down by a shadowy organization whose mission is to prevent at all costs the social upheaval sudden technological advances bring. This Bureau of Technology Control uses the advanced technologies they have harvested over the decades to fulfill their mission.

They are living in our future.

Presented with the opportunity to join the BTC and improve his own technology in secret, Grady balks, and is instead thrown into a nightmarish high-tech prison built to hold rebellious geniuses like himself. With so many great intellects confined together, can Grady and his fellow prisoners conceive of a way to usher humanity out of its artificial dark age?

And when they do, is it possible to defeat an enemy that wields a technological advantage half a century in the making?

Babble:
The blurb is so...long but it really make me more curious to check out the book. Granted, I haven't read a proper adult sci-fi book for so long.

Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Living Blond Trilogy

Hi, everyone! Today I'm having a Book Blitz for the super fun and quirky Living Blond series by Allison Rushby. Check out the awesome books and don't forget to enter the giveaway for the chance to win 20 super-cute ‘We love Marilyn’ ‘Marilynette’ wristbands!

Living Blond Trilogy: Diamonds Are a Teen’s Best Friend
Allison Rushby
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult
Sypnosis:
Nessa Joanne Mulholland, aka Marilyn Monroe's No. 1 teenage fan, is used to moving house. This time, however, she's relocating in movie-star style—crossing the Atlantic on board the Majestic, headed for Paris from New York City. And it really would be in movie-star style if it wasn't for the fact that she's bringing her cringe-fest professor dad along for the ride (Dad's specialization: human mating rituals—need Nessa say more?). Oh yeah, and sharing a cabin that's five decks below sea level and next to the engine room. Still, at least Holly Isles is on board. Yes, really, that Holly Isles—star of stage and screen. Suddenly, things are looking up. Looking a little Marilyn, in fact, because events are strangely mirroring Nessa's favorite movie of all time, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Watch!
As Holly Isles, world-famous actress, confides in Nessa over mocktails.
Listen!
As Nessa coaches Holly in the amazing "Nessa's Lesson's in Love"—the ultimate man-catching rules to finding true and lasting lurv.
See!
Nessa fall for Holly's too-cute nephew, Marc. . . and
Cover your eyes!
As it all goes terribly, horribly, embarrassingly wrong.
There's no doubting it. This is going to be one pitchy crossing.

Living Blond Trilogy: The Seven Month Itch
Allison Rushby
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult
Sypnosis:
Nessa Joanne Mulholland, aka Marilyn Monroe's No. 1 teenage fan, is living the high life in Manhattan. Literally. Waffling and pancaking it up every morning (care of housekeeper Vera) in her soon-to-be stepmother's Tribeca penthouse apartment. Things couldn't be better. Or so she thinks, until things start to go terribly, horribly wrong, in true Nessa fashion. All of a sudden, she's starting to feel the need to pull at her collar. Yes, it's summer in NYC and things are heating up fast, including the professor and Holly's wedding plans.
Gasp!
Along with Nessa as her dad's too-gorgeous research assistant moves into the new family penthouse while Holly's away filming in LA . . .
Cringe!
As Nessa gets dumped for "Doris Day" . . .
Hiss!
As Kent Sweetman decides he wants Holly back, wedding or no wedding . . . and
Bite your nails!
As the cupcakiest wedding ever hangs in the balance.
Phew! The temperature's getting hotter by the second, heat rash is setting in fast—and everyone's starting to scratch that Seven Month Itch!

Living Blond Trilogy: How to Date a Millionaire
Allison Rushby
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult
Sypnosis:
Nessa Joanne Mulholland, aka Marilyn Monroe's No. 1 teenage fan, is about to become a big sister—twice over. Her movie-star stepmother, Holly, is very pregnant with twins when, suddenly, B and G (that's Boy and Girl) decide they need to get away from it all.
Within hours, Nessa, her dad, Holly, her best friend Alexa, and tag-along cousin Nat are on a private jet and headed for some rest and relaxation Hawaiian style. Except that, on hitting the sand, there's not a lot of rest and relaxation to be found. The penthouse apartment they've booked is suddenly unavailable, Holly's blood pressure skyrockets, Nat is bronze-beach-boy crazy, and what's with the three cute guys living upstairs?
Laugh!
At Nat's crazy antics (will Nessa and Alexa really have to chain her to the apartment balcony to keep her out of boy trouble?)
Cry!
When Nessa meets someone who's had the life-saving operation her mother couldn't have.
Sigh!
As two gorgeous babies make their way into the world . . . and
Applaud!
As Nessa finally gets things right . . . for once.

AUTHOR BIO:
Having failed at becoming a ballerina with pierced ears (her childhood dream), Allison Rushby instead began a writing career as a journalism student at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Within a few months she had slunk sideways into studying Russian. By the end of her degree she had learned two very important things: that she wasn't going to be a journalist; and that there are hundreds of types of vodka and they're all pretty good. After several years spent whining about how hard it would be to write a novel, she finally tried writing one and found it was quite an enjoyable experience. Since then, she has had nine novels published. She keeps up her education by sampling new kinds of vodka on a regular basis.
